logo_icThe International Committee is one of 14 nationwide federations of immigrants' organisations. We want to empower immigrants' organisations by stimulating  their independence. This wil enable them to defend their rights single-handedly and to feel at home in Belgium.

To this end we hold a few master cards:

We are both multi-ethnic and multi-cultural - We have a permanent staff - We offer a larger network

Our mission:

The International Committee (IC) is a not-for-profit-association; a democratic, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural nationwide federation of immigrants' organisations. By uniting immigrants' organisations the IC aims at enhancing the social participation, the emancipation, the social fabric and the independence of immigrants and groups of immigrants. The workings of the IC are based on the European Declaration of Human Rights and on the fundamental objectives of the ACW. Our methods are socio-cultural.

Being an immigrants association, and in view of our mission, we strive to bring together immigrants in all their diversity, because we want to realise mutual solidarity between ethnically diverse groups.

We want to bring about the emancipation of entire groups by helping their own, independent organisations.

It is our conviction that participation and emancipation can only be rooted in the specific identity of every ethnicity and culure.

We want to defend the interests of immigrants and their organisations because in our society they often are a feeble and vulnerable group.

We pay specific attention to this vulnerable group, because it has less opportunities and is more frequently limited by factors leading to social exclusion.

We aim at organising dialogue and co-operation at three levels:

  • Between immigrants
  • Between immigrants' organisations
  • Between the above and the indigenous population

Being a federation, the IC has four socio-cultural functions: meeting (coming together), dispersing culture, education and community building.  We want to realise these fuctions in time with our participating organisations.

An important part of our mission is looking after the interests of our target groups.

Because of the specific situation of discrimination and iniquity of immigrants and their organisations, the IC looks after the interests of it's associated groups and their members.

In the process of realising our mission, particular attention goes to:

  • Supporting and guiding immigrants' organisations
  • Fascilitating and supporting the coming together and the cultural expression of every group
  • Providing trainers and teachers
  • Offering ample occasions to meet one another at monthly meetings of answerable persons from each background
  • Broadcasting information on current social and political topics (in Dutch and/or other languages)
  • Looking after the interests of immigrants in a number of fields

What do we offer?

For every associated organisation:

  • On the spot and fitting guidance
  • To be present on board meetings
  • Help in programming activities
  • Assistance in problem solving
  • Broach problems with the authorities
  • Provide education and training for board members (meeting techniques and conversational competence, information concerning legislation and regulation of non-profit organisations, representational methods, etc.)
  • Logistical support
  • Providing beamers, lap tops, internet, camera, etc.
  • An example programme dossier

Purposes of the programme dossier:

  • Helping member organisations to draft a programme
